New Jersey Doughboys
New Jersey contains many WW1 Doughboy statues. Many of them are either Viquesney's "Spirit of the
American Doughboys" or some variation of the soldier at attention monument which are pretty
common though out the country however I wanted to include the following 2 memorials on this site
because they are quite remarkable. The memorial above is located on Valley Road in Edgemont Park
in Montclair NJ. It features two attacking Doughboys shielded by a Victory Angel. Enscribed along the
base and sides are the names of the soldiers who served from Monclair. At the top of the obelisk is
another Victory angel holding a staff and flag. Dedicated in 1924. Sculptor is NYC born Charles Keck
(1875 - 1951) who created many public works in the NYC area including the Father Duffy memorial in
Times Square.  This monument enjoys one of the best locations. It sits on an island within a pond that
also features a memorial fountain.
The monument below is another obelisk that also features two attacking Doughboys.
Located in a roadside park along McBride Ave. in Paterson NJ. Sculptor is Federici Gaetano
(1880-1964). Federici was born in Italy but moved to Paterson as a young child and attended
the Paterson school systems. He is also responsible for several public works in and around
the city including the WW1 Victory Angel featured below that is located in Pennington Park
close to JFK High School.
Perhaps this is the moment it all started!  The two pictures below are of me
and my brother photographed with the Paterson Doughboys ca 1975. Photos
were taken by our grandfather who was a WWII 77th Division veteran.
