Located along Palisades Avenue in Cliffside Park. Sculptor - Alfred G. Newman - 1919. In 1919
Newman created a total of three of these Doughboy statues. The other two still exist today and
are located in Rhinebeck NY and Lawrenceville PA.
This Doughboy is located in the town of Ridgefield NJ. The statue is positioned on top of a large
boulder that is situated on a traffic island located at the intersection of Route 5, Elm and North
Broad Street. According to the town website it was dedicated on Nov 11 1928. The statue is made
of bronze and weighs over 900 lbs. From these angles it appears the Doughboy has climbed out
of his trench and is beginning his advance towards the enemy.
Two pictures below are of a Doughboy statue located in Ellsworth Park in Union City. The park is
located at 23rd and Palisades Ave which is right off Route 3. Like many other Doughboy statues
his bayonet is broken off his rifle. I wonder if its vandalism or just a weakness inherent in many
of these works ? An actual picture of a Doughboy is found at the bottom right for comparison.
